Jackrabbits Cross Country Ski Program

Jackrabbits Ready to Run!

The Jackrabbit Cross-Country Ski Programme is available in Orangeville to provide Nordic Ski instruction to kids aged 5 to 12.  The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment and we hope to help our youth develop an appreciation for the outdoors in winter.  The results are better fitness through active participation.

This is the Optimist Club of Orangeville's 26th anniversary of providing this service to the youth of our community.  Over the years, the Club members have provided guidance and ski instruction to hundreds of young skiers.  Some of the earliest participants are now returning to help with the instruction and offer inspiration to the new kids!

In co-operation with the Mono Nordic Club the Optimists use their trail system and training facilities at Monora Park on the northern border of Orangeville.  This is a world class course and has helped develop many excellent cross country skiers and Olympic competitors over the years.

The Optimist members work with the kids for two hours every Sunday afternoon, (2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.) This year our sessions start on Sunday January 4th (snow conditions permitting) and will continue on into the spring as long as we have sufficient snow.

This is an economical form of recreation for the kids.
Cost to participate in the program is $40 for a non-member of the Mono Nordic Ski Club and $30 for a member.  Families with more than 3 children registering together will be capped at $120 for a non-member and $90 for a member family.

Spaces are limited. For registration or more information, please call: Todd Taylor, Optimist Jackrabbits - 942-8681 or Jerry Hipfne, Mono Nordic Club - 941-0322

Optimist Bliss Daley introduced this programme to the Club in 1983 (when he was a teen-ager) and served as an instructor for twenty-three years.

The commitment we have made is to work with Orangeville kids for 2 hours every Sunday as long as there is snow to ski on.

Presently there is capacity for about 70 young participants under the guidance of Optimists Todd Taylor, Everett Lusk, Al White, Dave Clark.

With the generous co-operation of the Mono Nordic Club we have been using their ski trail system at Monora Park at no charge for all these years.

Over the years many Club members have served hundreds of our youth by participating as jackrabbit instructors and administrators.  Many others have never seen our programme in action.  Why not visit us some Sunday?   Working with kids is what it is all about!
